DePaul Faces NCAA Tournament team Green Bay at McGrath-Phillips Arena
CHICAGO – What could be a season unlike any other in DePaul women's basketball history tips off at 7 p.m. Friday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
In the heart of Lincoln Park, the defending BIG EAST champion Blue Demons will open up their 2018-19 campaign against a talented Green Bay opponent that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 years last March.
Coach Doug Bruno and his team will be shooting for a sixth-consecutive BIG EAST regular-season title, fourth BIG EAST Tournament crown in six years and their 17th-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Their goal is to advance beyond the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
Leading the way for No. 15/15 DePaul are Preseason All-BIG EAST selections Mart'e Grays and Kelly Campbell. Grays led the team in scoring last year at 14.4 points per game and has been named to the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award Top 20 Watch List.
Campbell averaged 10.6 points while leading the team in rebounds, assists and steals. The Street and Smith Preseason All-America Third Team choice and earned a spot on the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award Top 20 Watch List.
Leading three-point scorer Ashton Millender returns after averaging 13.6 points and connecting on 103 shots from beyond the arc---second-highest season mark in program history.
Chante Stonewall emerged as a big contributor in her second season averaging 10.7 points and helping to anchor the frontcourt along with Grays. Tanita Allen averaged nearly 10 points a game coming mostly off the bench and won the BIG EAST Sixth Player Award as a sophomore.
Together, this talented quintet accounted for nearly 60 points a game. The team averaged nearly 83 points a game last season along with 12.1 three-pointers per game.
The Blue Demons led the nation in three-pointers per game last season and were second in total three-pointers and attempts. They finished No. 4 in the country in total assists and assists per game, No. 5 in assist-turnover ratio, No. 6 in scoring offense and No. 31 in rebounding.
Campbell was No. 2 in the nation in assist-turnover ratio and No. 18 in assists. Millender finished No. 16 in the country in three-pointers.
DePaul partisans got a sneak preview of what the 2018-19 season could look like during a 140-62 exhibition game triumph last Monday over NAIA national semifinalist Saint Xavier. Eight Blue Demons scoring in double figures lit up McGrath-Phillips Arena as Grays led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Last season, DePaul (27-8 15-3) led a rapidly improving BIG EAST in 10 statistical categories including scoring offense, assists, three-pointers, scoring margin, rebounding offense, defensive rebounds and assist-turnover ratio. Campbell topped the conference in assists and assist-turnover ratio while Millender led the league in three-pointers, three-point percentage and three-pointers per game.
Bruno points out two reasons why this could be a one-of-a-kind season---experience and depth. Grays and Millender, one of the nation's top three-point shooters, are fifth-year seniors. Joining them is sixth-year senior and former McDonald's All-American Rebekah Dahlman.
Fourth-year senior Allen won the BIG EAST Sixth Player Award as a sophomore. Juniors Campbell and Stonewall have played extensively their first two seasons. There are also two quality players in sophomore Dee Bekelja and redshirt freshman Jolene Daninger who are both showing signs of really contributing to the team.
Bruno said three of his incoming freshmen (Lexi Held, Sonya Morris, Maya Stovall) have shown they will play and contribute to the program's success. Along with the four returning starters and four other returnees, these Blue Demons can go 11-deep. Last year's team went seven-deep.
National prognosticators agreed wholeheartedly. In six preseason national rankings, DePaul was slotted from No. 13 to No. 18. Both the Associated Press and the USA/Coaches preseason polls placed the Blue Demons at No. 15
The team that last season came within three seconds of advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 is also ranked No. 13 by Lindy's Sports magazine, No. 14 by the ESPNW early poll, No. 16 by Street & Smith magazine and No. 18 by Athlon Sports magazine.
The Blue Demons head into 2018-19 tabbed as the BIG EAST co-favorite (with Marquette) to win their sixth consecutive regular-season title.
Green Bay opened its season Tuesday night with a 57-55 home loss to Northwestern. The Big Ten team outscored the Phoenix 23-14 in the fourth quarter. Freshman Hailey Oskey led Green Bay with 18 points including 5-of-6 from three-point range.
