
Late Flurry By Red Storm Holds Off DePaul

CHICAGO - Eli Cain's double-double led five players in double-figures, but a late flurry by the visiting Red Storm saw St. John's leave Wintrust Arena with a 77-76 win over DePaul. Cain finished with 19 points and a career-high 11 assists for the Blue Demons.
In the final two minutes, St. John's scored five unanswered points to pull ahead 75-71. A Marin Maric put back brought DePaul within two, and following a free throw for St. John's, Max Strus' bid for the tie just missed with five seconds left as the Red Storm held on. St. John's led for just under seven minutes total in the entire game, but behind 50 combined points for Shamorie Ponds and Marvin Clark II the Red Storm held off the Blue Demons.
All five DePaul starters finished in double-digits Maric scored 15 points with nine rebounds and Strus totaled 14 points and eight boards. Tre'Darius McCallum added 12 points and seven rebounds and Brandon Cyrus totaled 10 points and four rebounds. DePaul outrebounded St. John's by a margin of 45-25 in the game.
Cain knocked down two three's to start the evening and then connected on a jumper to lead DePaul (10-15, 3-10 BIG EAST) to a 12-5 lead five minutes into the game.
The Red Storm (14-13, 3-11 BIG EAST) would pull within one at 16-15, but a 7-0 run from the Blue Demons pushed the DePaul advantage up to eight at 23-15.
The final eight minutes of the first half saw St. John's outscore DePaul, 22-15, to trim the Blue Demon lead to 38-37 going into the intermission.
After going scoreless in the first half, back-to-back Maric three-point plays sparked the Blue Demons on a 10-4 run that made the score 48-41.
After the Red Storm fought back to take a 59-58 lead, Maric found Brandon Cyrus atop the three-point line who hit the shot to put the Blue Demons back in front, 61-59, with seven a half minutes to play.
Five and a half minutes later, with two minutes left on the clock, a Cyrus tap in put DePaul up one at 71-70.
For the Red Storm, Ponds led all scorers with 26 points, 10 assists and five rebounds while Clark added 24 points and five rebounds.
The Blue Demons return to action Sunday as DePaul travels to Newark, N.J. for a 1 p.m. ET tip with Seton Hall. The game can be seen on FS1 with the radio broadcast on 670 The Score.
