CHICAGO - DePaul came up just a little short Friday night in a long and closely fought BIG EAST Conference match at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
After a 4-hour and 15-minute duel, the Blue Demons fell 4-3 to Xavier in a contest that saw tiebreakers in two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches including Tamas Zador's match against Xavier's Gabriel Araujo in which the second set was settled after nine tiebreakers.
Xavier (5-12, 2-1) claimed the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. DePaul's Christopher Casati and Luuk Wassenaar won their match 7-6 (3) over Matthew Graft and Connor LaFavre.
Wassenaar put the home team on the scoreboard with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory over Jan Vrba at No. 6 singles.
That's when the Musketeers swept to the match win by prevailing at No. 5, No. 4 and No. 3 singles. At No. 4, Casati lost his match after three tiebreakers in the third set. Zador's final tally at No. 3 was 2-6, 7-6 (9), 6-3.
Alex Galoustian won his match at No. 1 singles and Boris Spanjaard matched that at No. 2 after winning the third set 7-6 in five tiebreakers.
The Blue Demons (12-9, 1-1) return to the court April 14 for a 3:15 conference match against Butler at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
