Track and Field Hosts DePaul Invitational This Weekend

CHICAGO ââ'¬" The DePaul track and field teams welcome competition to Lane Stadium this weekend for the DePaul Invitational. Benedictine, Chicago State, UIC, Milwaukee, Northern Illinois and Valparaiso are scheduled to compete starting Friday afternoon.
The men's and women's hammer throw opens the competition on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The remainder of events take place on Saturday at Lane Stadium beginning at 10 a.m. A BIG EAST Championship ring ceremony followed by Senior Day festivities are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. following the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Saturday's meet scheduled concludes with the 4x400-meter relay starting at 2:25 p.m.
Blue Demons Collect BIG EAST Weekly Honors: DePaul's Emily Eller, Jade Gates and Brian Mada have all be selected as BIG EAST Field Athletes of the Week during the outdoor season. Mada has claimed the award three times while Eller and Gates have earned the honor once.
Eller broke her own school record with a distance in the shot put of 14.43 meters at the UNF Spring Break Invitational to earn the selection from the conference office. The DePaul junior bettered her previous-best mark of 14.33 meters set in 2016 and finished in second place in Jacksonville.
Mada has won the long jump and triple jump titles in each of the three meets this season and garnered subsequent BIG EAST honors each time. At the UNF Spring Break Invitational he set personal record marks in both events. He followed the UNF performance up with another sweep of the long and triple jumps at the Baylor Invitational to win athlete of the week honors for the second time in the outdoor season. Most recently, he complete the jumps sweep and broke his own record in the triple jump with a mark of 15.74 meters at the Illinois Twilight.
Gates won both the javelin throw and the hammer throw on Saturday in Champaign. The freshman won the javelin with a personal-best distances of 47.43 meters. Gates also won the hammer throw with a toss of 50.52 meters, and recorded the BIG EAST's 10th-best shot put (12.40m) this season.
Looking Ahead: Following the DePaul Invitational, the Blue Demons travel to Louisville for the Lenny Lyles/Clarke Wood Invitational on April 27-28. The two-day meet is the final tune up before the annual BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on May 11-12 in Geneva, Ohio.
