Cameron, New Zealand Finish Second at FIBA U18 Asian Championship

DePaul guard averaged 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists in seven games
NONTHABURI, Thailand – DePaul freshman guard Flynn Cameron helped his New Zealand U18 team to a runner-up finish on Saturday to conclude the FIBA U18 Asian Championship. With the silver-medal finish, New Zealand qualifies for next summer's U19 FIBA World Cup.
Cameron averaged 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists in seven games in Thailand during the tournament. His 5.6 assists per game ranked second among all players as the Junior Tall Blacks went 5-2 overall. Hyunjung Lee from Korea led the tournament with 6.0 assists per game. Cameron ranked second in assists per game, tied for 23rd in points per game and tied for 26th in rebounds per game while his .440 (33-75) field goal percentage was ranked 22nd among the players in Thailand.
Australia was the only team to defeat New Zealand with a win in the Group Phase and in the championship game in the Final Phase. The Junior Tall Blacks posted wins of 96-62 over Bahrain and 89-47 against Thailand before falling 111-62 to Australia in Group C competition.
In the Final Phase, New Zealand defeated India, 109-76, before an 87-72 victory over Iran in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal, New Zealand knocked off China, 87-82, before falling to Australia, 72-63, in the final.
Cameron scored 15 or more points in each of the final three games that included a 19-point, 12-assist, 10-rebound triple-double against China. He finished with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds in the final against Australia and posted 15 points, eight assists and four boards against Iran in the quarterfinals. In the Group Phase, Cameron pulled down 11 rebounds along with 10 points and four assists against Thailand.
The U19 Asian Championship was Cameron's third FIBA tournament as he also represented New Zealand at the 2016 FIBA U18 Oceania Championships and the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup. He joined the DePaul program in December 2018 and didn't play in any games during the 2017-18 season for the Blue Demons. Cameron will have four seasons of eligibility starting with the upcoming 2018-19 campaign.
