Elgren, Deck Lead at Loyola Invite

Newcomer Maret Elgren finished first for the Blue Demon women’s squad
CHICAGO — Competing in a group of over 200 racers, freshman Maret Elgren led the women's cross country team in the Sean Earl University/Collegiate race at the 41st Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Beach on Saturday. Members from the DePaul track & field and volleyball teams were in attendance to cheer on the Blue Demons as they competed against 30 teams from across the nation including Princeton, Texas A&M, Ohio State and host Loyola Chicago.
The newcomer from Chanhassen, Minn. clocked in a time of 19:03 in the 5k course. Just seconds after, senior Caroline Kurdej crossed the line at 19:11. Elgren and Kurdej have finished in the top three in every race for the Blue Demons this season. Rounding out the top five for the women's squad were Courtney Pickering (19:19.09), Emma Stephens (19:24.70) and (Margaret Hastings (19:31.99).
Pacing the men's squad was senior Noah Deck who has finished in the top three for the Blue Demons in the previous two races this season. Deck crossed the finish line with a time of 25:20.11 to finish 52nd in a group of 349 racers from across the nation in the highly competitive meet. Senior Jeremy Lozano finished second for the Blue Demons with a time of 26:15.23 in the 8k race. Rounding out the rest of the men's squad to earn points were Conor Fagan (26:36.90, Charlie McIntyre (26:52.25 and newcomer Shane Knanishu (27:13.54).
Up Next
The Blue Demons men's and women's cross country teams travel to Peoria, Ill. to compete in the Bradley Pink Classic. The course will serve as the site of competition for the NCAA Midwest Regionals in November. This is their last regular season meet before the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 27.
