Four Blue Demons force three sets in road setback
MADISON, Wis. -- After opening the spring season with a weekend split against Green Bay and Minnesota, DePaul hit the road again looking to get back in the win column, but couldn't quite find their rhythm against another formidable Big Ten program.
The Blue Demons fell 1-6 in a gritty matchup with a Wisconsin team that finished No. 28 in the ITA national poll two seasons ago and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The bright spot for coach Matt Brothers' team was Vito Tonejc's hard-fought, grind out 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5) victory over Jesper Freimuth at No. 2 singles.
At No. 5 singles, Luuk Wassenaar hung tight against Lenard Soha before succumbing 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Junior Boris Spanjaard fought until the end at No. 1 singles in a three set setback to Osgar O'Hoisin 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, while teammate Tamas Zador turned in a gutsy performance at No. 6 singles, before Robert Krill of Wisconsin prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
The Blue Demons will look to split the weekend competition as they return to Chicago for their home opener against BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Saturday at 4 p.m.
