DePaul Caps Off 2019 Season at Creighton; Wins First Set Against the Bluejays Since 2016

CHICAGO - The Blue Demons finish the 2019 season 14-16 (6-12 BIG EAST) and won the first set against Creighton in the last seven meetings between the two after falling 0-3 (19-25, 21-25, 27-25, 21-25) Sunday morning in Omaha, Neb. The Blue Demons have substantially improved from last season's record of 5-24 (3-15 BIG EAST) as head coach Marie Zidek continues to rebuild the program.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE » An Elana Brueggemann kill gave DePaul the first point and Creighton followed with a 3-0 run. DePaul knotted the score but fell behind again after three straight Bluejay service aces. DePaul called the first timeout being down 8-14. DePaul held on but Creighton took the first set 25-19.
SET TWO » Creighton quickly doubled DePaul's score at 6-3. The score knotted at 8-8 before Creighton called a timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Bluejays went on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 14-8. Both teams fought hard and Creighton maintained a comfortable lead until DePaul went on a late 3-0 run featuring a Mattie Norris kill. With DePaul in a 21-24 deficit, Creighton called a timeout but went on to take the set 25-21.
SET THREE » DePaul took an early 3-2 lead and then took its first two point lead of the day at 7-5. A huge block from Emma Price paired with a Creighton attack error gave the Blue Demons their largest lead of the match at 13-9, urging a Creighton timeout. Out of the stoppage, DePaul grew its lead to six on a kill from Brittany Maxwell and a block from the pair of Maxwell and Donna Brown. Creighton took another timeout with DePaul leading 19-13 after a block from Avarie Evans-Allen and Natalie Hayward. Creighton started to close in with DePaul leading 21-19, bringing a Blue Demon timeout. An Evans-Allen kill brought DePaul to set point but Creighton knotted the score 24-24. A service ace from Maxwell gave DePaul a 27-25 set win.
SET FOUR » DePaul jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and back-to-back kills from Maxwell grew the lead to 7-1, forcing an early timeout from Creighton. Out of the break, the Bluejays went on a 3-0 run to close in on the deficit. DePaul gained back a five point lead at 11-6 but Creighton knotted the score at 12-12 and took a 15-12 lead, urging a DePaul timeout. A Creighton attack error knotted the score 18-18 but the Bluejays went on a 3-0 run to take back the lead and won the final set 25-21.
