Blue Demons collide with Creighton in BIG EAST semfinals at Wintrust Arena on FS1
CHICAGO – It must feel like déjà vu for No. 24 DePaul at the BIG EAST tournament.
The Blue Demons finished the BIG EAST regular season with victories over Providence and Creighton. A little more than a week later, the tournament's defending champion matches up with the exact same two teams.
So far, the results have been identical. DePaul (24-7) beat Providence on March 1 and duplicated that effort with an 85-60 triumph Sunday in the BIG EAST quarterfinals.
That brings us to Monday's semifinals and a rematch of the March 3 regular-season finale that saw the Blue Demons top Creighton in Omaha, Neb.
Second-seeded DePaul and No. 6 Creighton (15-15) will collide at 5:30 p.m. at Wintrust Arena with the semifinal being televised by FS1. Lisa Byington and former DePaul star Sarah Kustok will handle the call. The Blue Demons will be shooting to extend their winning streak to 10 in a row.
These two semifinalists match up well. The Bluejays came into McGrath-Phillips Arena back on Dec. 29 and spoiled the home team's BIG EAST season debut with an 85-82 upset. The Blue Demons returned the favor with a 74-67 victory on Creighton's home court.
Both teams have a trio of players averaging in double figures. DePaul is led by Mart'e Grays at 14.6 points per game and Chante Stonewall is averaging 13.8. Ashton Millender is scoring at a 13.2 clip.
Creighton counters with Audrey Faber at 16.7 points a game, Jalyn Agnew (11.2) and Temi Carda (10.1).
DePaul coach Doug Bruno is looking for his players to duplicate the defensive intensity that set the tone right from the opening tip on Sunday. Harassing the Friars and forcing turnovers while disrupting their offensive flow dictated the eventual outcome.
The Blue Demons come in with a 21-10 mark in the BIG EAST postseason. Since the conference was reconfigured in the 2013-14 season, DePaul has gone 13-2 in BIG EAST postseason action. The hottest team in the BIG EAST is aiming for its fourth BIG EAST title in the last six years.
Creighton locked up with No. 3 seed Butler in a Sunday's quarterfinal that was tight almost the entire game. The Bluejays led by two at halftime and by one after three quarters. They finally created a little separation outscoring Butler 17-9 in the fourth quarter en route to a 60-51 win.
Agnew led Creighton with 13 points and eight rebounds while Olivia Elger added 11 points and Faber 10.
No. 1 seed Marquette (25-6) and No. 4 Georgetown (16-14) clash in the first semifinal at 3 p.m. on Monday. Marquette swept a pair of highly competitive games in their BIG EAST regular-season series.
The semifinal winners advance to the 7 p.m. title game at Wintrust Arena that will be televised by FS1.
