DePaul improves its home record to 5-0
CHICAGO -- The DePaul men's tennis team came to play on Friday night on the courts of Lakeshore Sport and Fitness.
The Blue Demons took down Dayton to halt the Flyers' dual season winning streak at six.
Dayton took the doubles point and an early 1-0 advantage despite the continued success from DePaul's doubles tandem of Luuk Wassenaar and Conor O'Meara. With tonight's 6-4 victory over Steven Karl and Lorenzo Rollhauser, the Blue Demon duo improves to 9-2 in dual season play and has won their third match in a row.
Wassenaar carried the momentum into singles action to even the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 over the Flyers' Spencher Richey.
Fran Tonejc gave DePaul the 2-1 match lead with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat against Joe Demarco.
Reigning BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week, Vito Tonejc clinched his fourth win in a row and moved to 12-3 on the season with a straight set (6-2, 6-4) triumph over Jordan Benjamin at the No. 1 spot.
Boris Spanjaard returned to the win column to clinch the match for the Blue Demons, handing Langford Hills a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 2.
Christopher Casati earned DePaul's fifth point to seal the deal in a grueling 7-6 (1), 2-6, 10-6 match over Steven Karl.
DePaul (9-7, 3-1 BIG EAST) will return to action on Friday Mar. 22 at Lakeshore Sport and Fitness as the Blue Demons welcome Villanova (8-6, 1-0 BIG EAST) for a 6:15 p.m. match.
