Blue Demons move to 3-1 in BIG EAST action
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- In Friday night's BIG EAST tennis showdown between DePaul and Marquette, the Blue Demons came up just short in a 5-2 decision at the Helfaer Tennis Center.
DePaul opened the match by claiming the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 behind stellar performances by brothers Vito Tonejc and Fran Tonejc alongside Luuk Wassenaar and Conor O'Meara. Tonejc and Tonejc took down the duo of Luis Heredia Gomez and Luke Smrek 6-3 at No. 2, while Wassenaar and O'Meara ousted Fran San Andres and Greg Anderson at the No. 3 position, 6-4.
Vito Tonejc turned in another great performance at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Marquette's Alvaro Verdu. The freshman from Zagreb, Croatia recorded his third win in a row on Friday night and moved to 11-3 in dual season play to lead the Blue Demons.
DePaul (8-7, 3-1 BIG EAST) will return home to Lakeshore Sport and Fitness on Friday, Mar. 15 for a meeting with Dayton at 7:15 p.m.
