Blue Demons play in final event before BIG EAST Championship
CHICAGO – The DePaul golf team travels to Iowa City for the Hawkeye Invitational this weekend as the Blue Demons play in the final event prior to the BIG EAST Championship. The three-round, two-day event starts Saturday at Finkbine Golf Course at the University of Iowa.
The Hawkeye Invitational features 12 teams with host Iowa welcoming DePaul along with Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oral Roberts, South Dakota State and UMKC. DePaul's lineup includes Charlie Spencer-White, Joe McCarthy, Grant Boyson, Campbell Wolf and Carlo Antonio Gatmaytan while Perry Chong is competing as an individual.
Finkbine Golf Course features a par 71 layout over 6,884 yards. Play will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday with two round scheduled before Sunday's final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. Spencer-White led the Blue Demons last season at the Hawkeye Invitational in a weather-shortened 36-hole tournament. He finished in a tie for 26th and McCarthy was tied for 35th place.
Spencer-White Named BIG EAST Player of the Week: Following a career-best performance at the North Alabama Spring Classic, DePaul senior Charlie Spencer-White was named the BIG EAST Golfer of the Week. Spencer-White posted his best finish, best tournament score and top single round to earn league honors.
Spencer-White recorded the best finish of his career by taking second place at the North Alabama Spring Classic. His 2-under par score of 214 over 54 holes was a career best and his 67 in the first round on Monday was the top round of his career. The Blue Demons tied for seventh place on the team leaderboard. The tournament was held at the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club in Killen, Ala.
Spring Recap: Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play (Feb. 11-12) – DePaul went 2-1 in the match play event... lost to Ball State, 3.5-2.5, before wins over Drake (3.5-2.5) and Ohio (4.5-1.5)... Campbell Wolf went 2-0-1 while Carlo Antonio Gatmaytan and Bobby Thomas were 2-1-0 in their matches. Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate (Feb. 23-25) – The Blue Demons finished 13th out of 16 teams... Charlie Spencer-White was the top finisher in a tie for 38th place... Spencer-White's 70 and a 70 by Joe McCarthy in the second round were the top rounds of the event for DePaul. North Alabama Spring Classic (March 25-26) – Charlie Spener-White led the way with a second-place finish... he posted best career finish, best round (67) and best 54-hole score (214)... DePaul was tied for seventh out of 12 teams. Bradley Spring Invitational (March 30-31) – Tournament was cancelled due to weather.
Fall Recap: EKU Intercollegiate (Sept. 15-16) – Campbell Wolf led DePaul in his first collegiate event... Wolf (214, 4) finished in a tie for 13th... Joe McCarthy posted the best round by a Blue Demon with a 69 (-1) in the second round... DePaul finished 14th out of 15 teams. SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational (Sept. 24-25) – Joe McCarthy (213, E) and Campbell Wolf (214, 1) posted top 20 finishes to lead DePaul... McCarthy finished in a tie for seventh while Wolf was in a group in 11th place... as a team, the Blue Demons finished sixth among the 17 programs. Flyer Invitational (Oct. 15-16) – Joe McCarthy (220, +7) finished in a tie for 20th for his second top 25 finish of the season... Charlie Spencer-White (222, +9) was tied for 30th place... the Blue Demons finished 11th out of 12 teams competing. Musketeers Classic (Oct. 21-23) – DePaul finished seventh out of 13 teams... Bobby Thomas (221, +8) led the Blue Demons with a tie for 23rd place... Joe McCarthy (223, +10), posted a 69 (-2) in the third round and finished in a group in 32nd place. Chi-Town Showdown (Oct. 29) – DePaul dropped a match against Loyola-Chicago by a score of 15.5-11.5... Grant Boyson, Carlo Antonio Gatmaytan and Ronnie Griggs each captured a win for the Blue Demons.
Looking Ahead: The Blue Demons travel to South Carolina for the annual BIG EAST Championship at Callawassie Island Club. The three-day, three-round event is scheduled for April 26-28.
