Blue Demons face No. 1 seed St. John’s on Saturday afternoon
CAYCE, S.C. – Despite a rain storm that suspended play on Friday afternoon, No. 4-seeded DePaul is headed back to the BIG EAST Men's Tennis Championship semifinals after Saturday's 4-1 win over No. 5 Creighton.
The Blue Demons (11-13) will take on the No. 1 seed St. John's Red Storm in Saturday's semifinal with first serve set to begin at 3 p.m. (CT) at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
On Friday, Coach Brothers' team fell behind early in doubles action as the Bluejays took wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Christopher Casati evened the match for the Blue Demons with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Jose Diaz.
Fran Tonejc gave DePaul the 2-1 advantage at the No. 5 spot with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Bluejays Mac Mease.
Freshman Vito Tonejc kept the Blue Demons rolling at the No. 1 spot with his triumph over Nick Campbell in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
When play resumed on Saturday morning, the Blue Demons held a 3-1 lead and looked to finish the match with one more singles victory.
Luuk Wassenaar clinched the match for the Blue Demons with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 3 position over Armando Gandini.
