Three Blue Demons wrap up successful outdoor season, Larkin to see more action tomorrow
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Henry Larkin advances to the quarter finals as three Blue Demons cap off their successful season at the NCAA West Preliminaries hosted by Sacramento State. The national meet was hosted at Hornet Stadium and saw high-level competition from across the country battle for the top 12 spots to advance to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas.
Sophomore Jade Gates rounded out her season in the hammer throw with a distance of 56.09 meters. She edged out Michala Zilkey (55.69m) from Utah State to take the 37th spot in the event. The St. Louis, Mo. native, no stranger to the national spotlight, qualified for the NCAA West Prelims last season in the javelin where she placed 21st. She currently holds the school record in the event with a mark of 61.85 meters that she set at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood invite in April.
Continuing the action in the field was Caroline Muller in the high jump. The senior, who kicked off the competition for the Blue Demons, holds the program record with a 1.74-meter mark that she set at the first outdoor meet of this season. While the senior had a no-mark for the competition, she finishes her accomplished capstone season coming off a third-place finish at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
On the track, Kiersten Walker competed in the 400-meter dash, after qualifying with her personal best 53.88-second finish at the league championships that was good for silver. The sophomore standout clocked in a 54.55 time to finish just before Northern Arizona's Jasmine Malone who came in at 54.57 seconds. Walker was named to the All-BIG EAST teams for her finishes in four separate events at the conference meet in NYC.
Rounding out day one for DePaul was freshman Henry Larkin in the men's 400-meter dash. The Oakland, Calif. native qualified for the quarterfinals with a 46.76 time in the event, which flirts with his 46.46 personal best and school record. Larkin finished first in the 400-meter dash with a matching 47.64 seconds among BIG EAST competitors two weeks ago at the Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island.
Larkin's record-setting first year will continue tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. PT as he looks to punch his ticket to the finals in the Lone Star State in two weeks. Also seeing action tomorrow is senior Alexia Brooks in the 100-meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m. CT. Ending the action for the Blue Demons at the national preliminary rounds is fellow senior Jade Nolan in the women's triple jump on Saturday, May 25th at 3:00 p.m. PT.
