The men’s squad shows strong performances among conference and regional teams
NORMAL, Ill. — As it returns from its third meet of the season, the DePaul cross country team noted strong performances by the men's team led by junior Charlie McIntyre in the 8K. Crossing the finish line first among the Blue Demon women's team was led by senior Courtney Pickering in the 5K.
Â
Finishing in the top 20 in a field of over 80 competitors, Pickering set a new personal-best in the 5,000-meter race with an impressive 18:24.2 finish. Sophomore Maret Elgren and junior Margaret Hastings also set personal bests in the 5K clocking in times of 18:58.2 and 19:27.3, respectively. The combined team score put them atop Chicago rival UIC in the women's final standings.
Â
"I'm excited for our women to keep getting faster. Now we have to keep putting it together as a collective," said associate head coach Derrick Peterson.
Â
The 5K saw competitors from Loyola Chicago, Marquette, Southern Illinois, Northwestern, NIU and UIC. Â
Â
Though the men's team rested three on its roster, the Blue Demon men's squad had one of its best meets to date.
Â
"The men really stepped up and answered the call," Peterson said. Â
Â
No stranger to the front of the pack, junior Charlie McIntyre edged out Daniel Pederson of Marquette for an 11th place overall finish in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:05.1 to set an impressive new personal best.
Â
Peterson added, "Charlie really put himself in the race and competed with the top of the men in the region. Following him was a pack of Ryan Bonfiglio, Michael Parry and Dominic Bruce."
Â
The trio each clocked times of 25:59.2, 26:08.2 and 26:08.6 on the clock, respectively. The combined men's team score also put them over the Flames as well as the Salukis. Also noting a strong finish among the team was sophomore Shane Knanishu who crossed the line to mark a 26:19.4 finish.Â
Â
"Shane raced the race of his career for the team today and really stepped up his level of competition," said Peterson.
Â
The 8K race saw 86 competitors from Marquette, Loyola Chicago, North Central, NIU, UIC and Southern Illinois.
