DePaul Seizes Tournament Champion Title

CHICAGO, Ill. - In front of a crowd of nearly 500 people, DePaul took down Valparaiso 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-15) to be crowned champion of its own tournament after going undefeated over the weekend.

"To have a defensive match like that against one of the best defensive teams in our region is special," said head coach Marie Zidek. "The way this team fights for each other is special.
"Our play extending ability continues to give our hitters a chance to work into rhythms and that happened tonight with Emma, Bailey, Elana, Donna, Avarie and Britt. Claire and Nat had monster games on defense and Katie's serving has been a huge momentum shift. I can't leave out the entire team. We continue to focus 17 v 6 grest to put on a show for our alumni night."
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE » The difference remained narrow until DePaul scored three of five points capped off by an Emma Price kill to take a 14-11 lead and urge the first Valpo timeout. Natalie Hayward served an ace out of the stoppage followed by a Brittany Maxwell kill. DePaul would remain ahead and take the first set 25-18.
SET TWO » Donna Brown struck down the first kill of the set and it would be back and forth until a 17-17 knot. DePaul went on a 3-0 run on two kills from Bailey Nelson and a Valpo attack error, bringing a Crusaders timeout. The Blue Demons held the lead and a Maxwell kill would give DePaul the second set 25-20.
SET THREE » The score once again went back and forth up until 9-9. With DePaul leading 14-11, Valpo would call a timeout. A Maxwell kill sparked another DePaul run that would grow the lead to 19-13, also capped off by a Maxwell kill and another Valpo timeout. Back-to-back kills from Elana Brueggemann would give DePaul the final set 25-15.
