Jovicic and Yergler tandem win twice Friday and advance into title match
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Blue Demons and new coach Marisa Arce got off to a fast start on Friday at the Purdue Invite.
The doubles team of Marija Jovicic and Maddie Yergler led the way with a pair of triumphs that advanced them into the title match of the Purdue Doubles Draw.
They opened with an 8-3 win over Maria Magro Quiroz and Laura Silveira of Bowling Green and advanced to the flight championship with an 8-2 decision over Northern Illinois' Mary Ellen Green and Christy Robinson.
Amanda Huser and Ana Philp of Cincinnati stand in their way of a tournament title.
The DePaul tandem of Aspasia Avgeri and Alina Kuzmenkova drew a bye into the quarterfinals of the Black Doubles Draw where they knocked off Lipscomb's Emma Zakordoniec and Liza Diachenko 8-5.
Freshman Yuliya Kizelbasheva notched the first win of her collegiate career teaming with Lenka Antonijevic for an 8-7 victory over Connecticut's Julieanne Bou and Mireille Moreau. They were upended in their next match 8-3 by Alexia Coutino and Ioana Guna of Cincinnati.
In singles, four Blue Demons advanced to the semifinals of their respective flights including Antonijevic and Yergler in the Purdue Pete Draw. If each wins on Saturday, they will face off in Sunday's championship.
Antonijevic eased past Connecticut's Caroline Cook 6-2, 6-1 and followed up with a 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1 victory over Lena Babunski of Miami (Ohio).
Yergler received a bye into the quarterfinals where the sophomore from Granger, Ind. shut out Eastern Michigan's Essence Eaton 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Layo Adelakun advanced in the Schwartz Tennis Center Draw after a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Bowling Green's Silveira. In the Purdue Draw, Kuzmenkova advanced with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 comeback decision over Ioana Guna of Cincinnati.
