DePaul Suffers Second Loss of the Season Against UIC

CHICAGO - The Blue Demons suffered their second loss of the season against UIC 0-3 (25-27, 23-25, 19-25) in the first day of the Chicago Cup to drop to 8-2 on the season.Â
FROM ZIDEK
"Hats off to a very balanced offense in UIC," said head coach Marie Zidek. "We came into this match knowing that their setters were going to put their attackers in position to score a lot of points and they did just that and unfortunately we were not able to defend them as well as we wanted.
"Our passing broke down in ways that we have not really experienced all year so the silver lining for us is that the girls played hard, they gave their best effort and our servicing game was just a little flat so that is something we hope to change for tomorrow against Loyola.
"Overall, I thought there were many parts of our game that went well. Offense was good, second ball setting was great, serving was great and we just have to clean up some of those areas and we will be back on track."
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE » Brittany Maxwell struck the first kill of the match and DePaul quickly captured a 5-1 lead featuring kills from Donna Brown and Avarie Evans-Allen and a pair of UIC attack errors. The Blue Demons remained ahead until a 10-10 knot in the score. The score would meet five more times with the highest being 25-25 but the last two points would go to the Flames, giving them the first set 27-25.
SET TWO » DePaul jumped into a 3-1 lead capped off by a Elana Brueggemann kill. The score eventually knotted at 9-9 but DePaul went on a 3-0 run courtesy of a Brueggemann kill and back-to-back kills from Donna Brown, forcing a UIC timeout. DePaul maintained a solid lead until a 19-19 knot, urging a Blue Demon timeout. Out of the stoppage, UIC jumped ahead and would take the second set 25-23.
SET THREE » The Blue Demons fell into a 1-5 deficit and remained behind until a 6-6 knot. Two UIC attack errors followed by a Emma Price kill and a Mattie Norris service ace led to a Flames timeout. Four more knots in the score would then see UIC take the lead and win the final set 25-19.

The Blue Demons will face Loyola tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT and will cap off the Chicago Cup with a contest against Northwestern at 8 p.m. CT.Â
