Senior Kyle Mastrangeli updates record book in the men’s 60-meter dash, Jade Gates update own record
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A new program record and multiple personal bests kicked off day one of the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. The Blue Demons saw multiple performers advance in the preliminary rounds of competition and were led by Kyle Mastrangeli in the 60-meter dash.
The senior from Elgin clocked in a record-setting 6.79 seconds in the event to replace the old record of 6.83 seconds set by Chris Kyles in 2011 and matched in 2013 by Jordon Vaughn. He will move on to the semifinal round along with his teammate Adam Nelson who followed closely behind with a 6.86-second mark to earn 7th overall in the highly-competitive meet.
Contining the success on the track for the men's squad were Ashton Colaire and Kyle Casper in the 60-meter hurdles. Casper's 8.43-second performance marked a new PR and Colaire, who currently holds the program record in the event, marked a time time of 8.09 seconds that was good for 5th place. On the distance side, senior Henry Harper continued his successful capstone year by clocking in a time of 14:38.51 in the 5,000-meter run.
For the women's squad, Kiara Pauli made her Blue Demon debut and qualified for the seminal rounds of the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.73 seconds. Crossing the line just a moment before was fellow teammate Tori Carroll with a time of 7.72 seconds to tie her personal best. Both sprinters will continue to the next round of competition along with Isabel Ingram and Dylan Armstrong in the 60-meter hurdles who clocked in times of 8.70 and 8.88, respectively.
Jade Gates once again marked a record book update in the weight throw competition. Her 20.19-meter throw replaces her current record of 18.92 meters. The St. Louis native also currently holds the program record in the hammer throw.
