Blue Demons cruise past Wright State 7-0 at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness
CHICAGO – This is a tennis team that's on a roll.
DePaul's 7-0 sweep of Wright State at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness gave coach Matt Brothers' program its fourth win in the last five matches.
And this time, it wasn't a nail-biter or a grueling contest with three-set outcomes all over the place.
It was nice and neat, beginning with the tandems of Vito and Fran Tonejc and Luuk Wassenaar and Tripp Tuff each winning their doubles matches to secure an early 1-0 lead.
At that point, DePaul (8-9) was just getting warmed up.
What came next was a decisive wave of decision as the Blue Demons swept all six singles matches.
Spanjaard picked up his second match-clinching win of the weekend with a 6-4, 6-1 verdict over Param Pun at No. 1.
Preceding Spanjaard, Vito Tonejc had taken down Leighton Brandon 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Wassenaar downed Theo Bourghelle 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Christopher Casati claimed the point at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Javier Alvarez.
After the clinch, Tuff knocked off Carlos Sanchez 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 and Fran Tonejc finished up with a 7-6(2), 6-3 win at No. 5.
"It was a solid showing today, and a great weekend overall for the team," Brothers said.
After a well-deserved break, DePaul will head west and go after its fifth win in its last six matches on March 26 at UC-Irvine.
