Three programs are ranked among top 10 percent of all teams in their sport
CHICAGO – Three DePaul programs were recognized with Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for having multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Women's basketball, men's golf and men's tennis were all recognized as the NCAA recognized nearly 1,400 Division I programs across the country.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. A total of 1,380 teams achieved top 10 percent recognition with APRs ranging from 987 to a perfect 1,000.
Women's basketball picked up the recognition for the 15th straight year and the program is just one of 62 teams from all sports that have earned the recognition in every year of program. Among the Division I women's basketball programs across the country, only DePaul and Dartmouth have qualified for the Public Recognition Award in all 15 years of the program.
The golf team was honored for the 14th time in 15 years while men's tennis was among the top 10 percent for the third consecutive year and fourth time overall.
DePaul's highest total is seven teams in 2010-11 and 2011-12 after having six teams earn the honor in 2004-05, 2009-10, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,380, up by 52 from the previous academic year. Of the teams recognized, 499 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 881 competed in women's sports. Every women's team earning a Public Recognition Award this year also earned a perfect score.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
