Earns ITA All-Academic Team Award for 13th Year in a Row
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis is being honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) after coach Marisa Arce's program compiled one of the nation's highest grade-point averages in the sport.
The Blue Demons have earned an ITA All-Academic Team Award for the 13th year in a row after posting a team GPA of 3.85. College teams with a 3.2 GPA or higher are being recognized.
Talk about finishing strong, Arce's team notched a perfect 4.0 GPA in a spring quarter that was rocked by a global pandemic, shelter-in-place orders, economic upheaval and nationwide protesting about racial injustice. The tennis players never wavered from their laser focus despite completely online learning.
"I can't recall that ever happening before where a team recorded a 4.0 for the quarter," said Associate Athletics Director Kate O'Brien who heads up a highly dedicated Athletics Academic Advising office.
At a university that prides itself competing in the classroom as fiercely as on the athletic field or court and is perennially at or near the top of the BIG EAST in academic prowess, women's tennis finished with the second-highest team GPA at DePaul.
These Blue Demons came in second behind only a men's tennis program that racked up a dazzling 3.89 team GPA.
Arce & Co. were at the forefront of an academic blue wave as the Blue Demons led the BIG EAST with six different teams earning BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards with the highest GPAs in their respective sports (men's and women's tennis, women's basketball, women's indoor track and field, men's soccer and volleyball).
Individually, seven of the eight student-athletes on the women's tennis team---Lenka Antonijevic, Aspasia Avgeri, Hristina Djokic, Marija Jovicic, Yuliya Kizelbasheva, Alina Kuzmenkova and Maddie Yergler---were recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes with GPAs of 3.5 or better.
Perhaps equally remarkable, six of these seven Scholar-Athletes are international students achieving on such a high plane while dealing with English as a second language.
ITA Communications Manager Caroline Huey said that both the women's and men's tennis team GPAs are among the highest in the country.
"Both teams have extremely high composite team GPAs, and we are impressed by all the work they did in the classroom," Huey said.
The ITA advocates academia as a key aspect of the college tennis experience. Collegiate tennis players add to the rich intellectual community found on college campuses across the nation.
ITA student-athletes continue to exceed expectations in the classroom and on the court. In 2020, a total of 1,430 Division I women student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and 244 women's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.
