Brown puts down 13 kills on 18 swings to lead the Blue Demons to victory
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball started the weekend off on a high note as the Blue Demons secured up a 3-0 sweep over visiting Seton Hall on Friday evening at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
With the win, DePaul improves to 11-8 on the season and 4-3 in BIG EAST action.
Set scores of the match were 25-23, 25-19, 25-16.
Donna Brown caught fire on Friday evening with a match-high 13 kills on 19 error-less swings to hit .684. Brown totaled a team-high four blocks and accounted for 16.0 points on the outing.
Jill Pressly terminated 12 balls to go along with five digs and three blocks.
Ashley Cudiamat dished out 23 assists and collected nine digs while fellow setter Molly Murrihy handed out 16 helpers and notched a service ace.
Libero Rachel Krasowski recorded a team-high 18 digs with sophomore outside hitter Hanna Karl chipping in 14 of her own.
How it Happened:
Set One – The first set proved to be the closest of all three as the two squads traded points through the first 26 rallies. A Pressly and Aly Kindelberger kill put the Blue Demons up 15-13 to force Seton Hall to use its first timeout of the stanza. Consecutive kills from Brown and Emma Price gave the Blue Demons a 22-21 advantage. Kindelberger hammered home a kill followed by a Murrihy service ace to put DePaul ahead 24-22. Pressly's fifth kill of the set gave DePaul the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set Two – The Blue Demons opened set two on an 8-3 run to force an early Pirates timeout. A Karl service ace followed by a Hall hitting error and Price kill put the Blue Demons up 15-9. Brown's ninth kill of the afternoon put DePaul in front 24-17 before a Pressly termination gave DePaul a 2-0 match lead.
Set Three – Set three proved to be evenly matched in the early goings as both sides were knotted at eight. The Blue Demons rattled off three points in a row to move in front 11-8 with Pressly behind the service line thanks to a service ace and back-to-back kills from Karl and Bailey Nelson. Consecutive Kindelberger kills put the Blue Demons ahead 20-14 before DePaul closed out the set on a 5-2 run to clinch the victory.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: "Our team defense really did a nice job of not allowing anything soft driven to score and more so we played those balls well enough to get high quality swings out, especially from our middles. It was great to see our two week practice block bleed into the match tonight. We were able to really get our middles going and when that happens, our pins are able to create more with their attacks as well. Rising tide lifts all boats. Can't wait for tomorrows opportunity vs St Johns. We have tremendous momentum and they stand in our way of a post season berth."
Up Next: The Blue Demons wrap up weekend action on Saturday evening with a 6 p.m. matchup against St. John's at McGrath Phillips Arena. The Red Storm are coming off a 3-0 defeat at Marquette and sit at 12-9 on the season and 3-4 in BIG EAST action.
