Blue Demon standout in round of 16 after winning pair of matches Saturday
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Vito Tonejc is in the "Sweet 16" of the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan State after a pair of straight-set wins on Saturday.
It's a shame a special cheering section who came out to support their fellow Blue Demons missed his performances.
Coach Doug Bruno brought his women's basketball team over to the MSU Indoor Tennis Center after the Blue Demons had played Michigan State in a closed scrimmage.
"It was great to have them show their support for another DePaul team, but unfortunately none of our guys were playing when they came by," said men's tennis coach Matt Brothers.
Bruno & Co. missed out on the nationally ranked Tonejc taking down Michigan State's Anthony Pero on his home court 6-3, 6-1 and following up with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Peter Kuszynski of Western Michigan.
Tripp Tuff won the opening set of his Main Draw singles match against Jackson Boone of Western Michigan but dropped the last two.
In consolation matches, Marino Jakic defeated Jonny Yaffe of Michigan 6-4, 7-6(4) while teammate Lars Peder Minsaas topped Toledo's Cole Shoults 6-2, 6-3. Sven Moser downed Dominick Cuchran of Illinois State 7-5, 6-3. Tuff fell 6-1, 6-0 to Notre Dame's Peter Conklin.
In the doubles quarterfinals, Tonejc and Jakic ran into two of the best doubles players in the country in an 8-4 setback to Ohio State's Justin Boulais and Robert Cash.
Cash had teamed with Matej Vocel to win the prestigious ITA All-American Championships earlier this month in Tulsa, Okla., and they are ranked No. 40 in the nation. Cash and Vocel defeated teammates Boulais and James Trotter in an all-Buckeye final.
Sunday's ITA Midwest Regional schedule features the Main Draw singles round of 16 followed by the quarterfinals.
