Solid showing at ITA Midwest Regional bodes well for dual-match season
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Vito Tonejc's run to the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan State was halted Sunday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Bidding for his third consecutive singles win, the junior from Zagreb, Croatia was upended by Northwestern's Trice Pickens 6-1, 6-1.
"He lost a tough one," said DePaul tennis coach Matt Brothers. "His opponent played really well and it just wasn't a good matchup for him today."
That would be the final match of DePaul's fall tournament season in which BIG EAST Player of the Year Tonejc exhibited the tennis prowess that earned him the No. 97 preseason ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
In addition, Tripp Tuff and Luuk Wassenaar showed marked improvements over last season and will provide scoring potential for coach Matt Brothers' program in the dual-match season.
Lars Peder Minsaas is healthy again and looks to be a reliable contributor after missing last season with an injury. Phasu Sirinit has made a successful jump from his freshman to sophomore season.
Among the freshmen, Matteo Iaquinto made an immediate impact racking up an impressive 10-4 singles record while Sven Moser went 8-7. Marino Jakic's skill set earned him a berth in the prestigious ITA All-American Championships earlier this month in Tulsa, Okla.
In addition, Leon Huck showed his potential coming within one win of qualifying for the Main Draw at the ITA Midwest Regional.
Jakic has teamed with Tonejc to form the Blue Demons' top doubles team that went 5-4 in the fall and came through with two wins over nationally ranked opponents. Both earned valuable experience and confidence facing the nation's best at the All-American Championships.
Wassenaar and Huck were 2-0 in doubles while Huck and Minsaas were 2-1.
"Overall, the tournament was great for us," Brothers said. "Our guys competed against and defeated players from some of the top teams in our region and in the country.
"It was a solid finish to our fall season. Now that we are no longer competing, I am looking forward to making some real strides with the team on the practice courts."
Brothers & Co. return to action on Jan. 14 opening the dual season against Florida Atlantic at the Arthur Ashe Invite in West Point, N.Y.
