
Freeman-Liberty and Jones Lead Second-Half Surge in Opener for Stubblefield's First Win

Both players record double-doubles as DePaul runs away from Coppin State
CHICAGO – Javon Freeman-Liberty and David Jones each posted double-doubles to lead DePaul to a season-opening 97-72 win over visiting Coppin State. Freeman-Liberty just missed the program's first triple-double as he totaled 25 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists while Jones totaled 23 points and 17 rebounds.
The Blue Demons got out of the blocks slow and fell behind 5-2 before Nick Ongenda started an 11-point run over the next four minutes. The flurry was punctuated by Philmon Gebrewhit who knocked down the first three-pointer of the season to put the Blue Demons ahead, 13-7, with 13:39 left in the half.
DePaul (1-0) led throughout the opening frame, but couldn't get away from the visiting Eagles. Freeman-Liberty's bucket gave the Blue Demons a 27-20 advantage with just over seven minutes on the clock.
The remainder of the opening half saw the teams go back-and-forth before Tyon Grant-Foster beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to give DePaul a 41-40 lead at intermission.
The Blue Demons picked up the pace in the first half of the second half and led, 69-54, on a Freeman-Liberty jumper with just under 10 minutes on the clock.
Two free throws by Courvoisier McCauley pushed the Blue Demon advantage over 20 points before Jones drilled a long ranger to make the score 86-63 with 5:31 left in the game. DePaul took its largest lead of the night at 90-65 on a three-pointer by Brandon Johnson with five minutes left in the game.
Jones added three steals and two blocked shots while Johnson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Ongenda chipped in 10 points with three boards and two assists and Gebrewhit totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The win was the first on the DePaul sideline for head coach Tony Stubblefield.
Coppin State (0-2) was led by 25 points from Jesse Zarzuela and 18 points by Mike Hood.
