Blue Demons push the scoreboard towards century mark in second straight win to open season
CHICAGO – DePaul lit up the Wintrust Arena scoreboard for the second time in as many games as the Blue Demons recorded a 99-66 win over Central Michigan on Saturday evening. Through two games this season, DePaul is averaging 98 points per game with an average margin of victory at 29 points per game.
Javon Freeman-Liberty led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Brandon Johnson added 20 points and seven boards. David Jones chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds while Philmon Gebrewhit scored 15 with eight boards and Courvoisier McCauley added 11 points off the bench.
Less than four minutes into the game, Gebrewhit nailed a three-point to give the Blue Demons an early 8-2 advantage.
Johnson's dunk pushed the lead to 18-9 with 12:35 left before Central Michigan put together a run and tied the score at 22-22 two minutes later. The two sides traded baskets over the remainder of the opening frame and DePaul took a 41-38 lead into the break.
Similar to the opener on Wednesday night, the Blue Demons turned up the offense in the second half and outscored the Chippewas by a 58-28 margin. The team combined to shoot .633 (19-30) from the field in the second stanza and led by as many as 35 points with 1:24 left on the clock.
DePaul (2-0) opened up the game midway through the half as the Blue Demons put together a 22-3 run over a five-minute stretch. Johnson converted a three-point play at the eight-minute mark that pushed the lead to 82-57.
Central Michigan (0-2) was led by 11 points for Aundre Polk and three other Chippewas added 10 points apiece.
The Blue Demons return to action next Thursday when Rutgers visits Wintrust Arena for the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on FS1 and WIND (560 AM).
