Averages 21 points and nine rebounds; Church named to Honor Roll
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – It didn't take long for Aneesah Morrow to make a good first impression on the BIG EAST Conference.
In the league's initial rollout of its weekly awards program, Morrow was chosen as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after scoring 31 points in her NCAA collegiate debut last Tuesday.
The groundbreaking performance that led the Blue Demons to a 114-71 season-opening triumph over Texas Southern at Wintrust Arena marked the first time in coach Doug Bruno's illustrious 36-year career that a DePaul player scored 31 in her first game as a freshman.
Morrow won the award going away after averaging 21 points, nine rebounds, 3.5 blocks and two steals in her first two games.
She was joined on the awards stand by teammate Deja Church who was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Church is off to her best start as a Blue Demon, with 21 points, five assists and four rebounds against Texas Southern followed by 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals in an 87-53 win over Loyola last Friday night at Wintrust.
On the season, Church is averaging 19.5 points a game---second on the team behind Morrow (21 points per game). She is third in rebounds at six a game behind Morrow (9) and Darrione Rogers (7.5).
Loyola coach Kate Achter in her postgame news conference said Church was the X factor and difference-maker in her team's loss.
Connecticut's Paige Bueckers was selected BIG EAST Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 34 points off 15-of-19 shooting as No. 2/2 UConn defeated RV/RV Arkansas on Sunday, 95-80.
The sophomore added six rebounds, four assists, two steals, two blocks and played all 40 minutes without recording a turnover.
Morrow and Church look to continue their fast starts on Monday night when they lead RV/RV DePaul (2-0) against No. 23/17 Texas A&M in the first big test of the early season.
