Late Game Three-Point Barrage Sends Blue Demons Past Rutgers

David Jones leads the way with 22 points in 73-70 victory
CHICAGO – DePaul connected on its final six field goal attempts including four from long range to take down Rutgers, 73-70, on Thursday night at Wintrust Arena. The game was the final contest of the Gavitt Tipoff Games as the BIG EAST claimed six of the eight games against its Big Ten foes.
The Blue Demons moved to 3-0 on the young season behind 22 points from David Jones including four-of-six from downtown while Javon Freeman-Liberty poured in 19 points and grabbed nine boards in 40 minutes of action.
Brandon Johnson brought down a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with nine points and three assists.
The first eight minutes of the first half were a back-and-forth affair with each team trading baskets through the first seven-and-a-half minutes. The Blue Demons were without a field goal for nearly four minutes as the Scarlet Knights went on a 7-2 run to build a 20-14 advantage to force DePaul to use a timeout.
Nick Ongenda dropped in his first points of the contest to end the scoring drought for DePaul and bring the Blue Demons back within four at 20-16.
A pair of Ongenda free throws sparked a 13-2 run for the Blue Demons, which saw Freeman-Liberty and Jones connect from behind the arc to put DePaul in front 29-25 with four minutes to go. Freeman-Liberty and Jones put up 11 points apiece in the first 20 minutes as the Blue Demons went into the locker room in front 33-29.
Rutgers poured in eight of the second half's first 11 points to take a 37-36 lead before the Blue Demons jumped back in front 43-41 with back-to-back buckets from Freeman-Liberty and Yor Anei.
The Scarlet Knights jumped back in front 58-55 before the Blue Demons hit five of their next five field goals including four triples with one apiece Philmon Gebrewhit and Freeman-Liberty and two from Jones to put DePaul on top 67-61 and ignite the Wintrust Arena crowd.
Jones connected from behind the arc for the fourth time on the night to give DePaul a four-point lead and Rutgers answered right back with a triple of their own to cut the Blue Demons lead to 71-70 with 37 seconds remaining. A pair of free throws from Jones sealed the deal as DePaul held on to win 73-70.
DePaul faces a short turnaround with Western Illinois visiting Wintrust Arena on Saturday evening for the first game of the Blue Demon Classic. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. with coverage on FS2 and 670 The Score.
