Four in Double-Figures Lead DePaul Over Montevallo

Blue Demons tune up for next Wednesday's opener against Coppin State at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – DePaul defeated visiting Montevallo in the lone exhibition game of the preseason as the Blue Demons prepped for next week's opener against Coppin State. Tyon Grant-Foster scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Javon Freeman-Liberty recorded a double-double of 14 points and 12 boards.
The Blue Demons jumped to a 12-2 lead with makes on six of their first eight attempts that included three dunks by Nick Ongenda and another flush by Yor Anei. Following Anei's dunk, Grant-Foster went behind the arc to put DePaul ahead, 15-2, just over six minutes into the action.
DePaul stayed hot throughout the first half and led by as many as 23 points at 38-15 with 3:18 left until intermission. The Blue Demons combined to shoot .556 (15-27) in the first period and were led by 10 points apiece for Ongenda and Freeman-Liberty.
Montevallo cut the deficit to five points with run that bridged halftime before back-to-back threes from Freeman-Liberty and Philmon Gebrewhit pushed the Blue Demon advantage back to double-figures.
David Jones knocked down two free throws with just over three minutes left in the game to give DePaul an 11-point lead at 65-54 before Montavello put together a late flurry to make the final score, 67-63, in favor of the Blue Demons.
Freeman-Liberty added four assists to his double-double while Ongenda tallied 13 points, five blocked shots and four rebounds. Jones added 11 points, five rebounds and three rejections off the bench.
Jason King and Braxton Bertolette led Montevallo with 16 points each.
DePaul opens the 2021-22 regular season at Wintrust Arena next Wednesday against Coppin State. Start time is set for 8 p.m. on FS1. The Coppin State game is the first of eight straight at Wintrust Arena for the Blue Demons to open the season.
