Morrow Makes History as BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

Until Monday, no one had ever won the award the first five weeks of the season
CHICAGO – High fives all around for Aneesah Morrow.
What's the occasion? Well, in the five weeks the BIG EAST has handed out weekly accolades, Morrow has made history winning every single BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award.
No one has ever done that the first five weeks of the season. The last time a freshman won the award five consecutive weeks was Villanova's Maddy Siegrist in December/January of the 2019-20 season.
The 6-foot, 1-inch power forward from Simeon made it five-for-five on Monday after helping lead DePaul to a 94-85 upset of No. 14/14 Kentucky last Thursday in storied Rupp Arena.
In the Blue Demons' best game of the season when all five starters scored in double figures and shot 50 percent or better, Morrow finished with 18 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
It was her fifth double-double in the first 10 games of her NCAA career and tied Morrow with Janai Crooms of Providence for the BIG EAST lead.
Villanova's Maddy Siegrist is BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 32 points and 13 rebounds in victories over James Madison and No. 23/20 Oregon State.
Morrow is fourth in the nation in rebounding, No. 6 in offensive rebounds per game and No. 10 in blocks and total rebounds per game. She is No. 11 in field goals, No. 13 in double-doubles, No. 14 in steals and No. 17 in points.
The imposing DePaul rookie may well be the most impactful freshman in the country, leading all first-year players in rebounding and placing second in scoring behind California's Jayda Curry.
The Her Hoops Stats website and newsletter ranked the nation's top 10 freshmen after the first month of the season and Morrow was No. 1 followed by Curry.
Morrow is averaging 18.4 points and nearly 12 rebounds a game while leading the BIG EAST in 12 statistical categories including points, field goals, rebounds, offensive rebounds, steals, blocks and double-doubles.
She has embraced the concept of hustling between the touches, relentlessly attacking the offensive glass and converting her teammates missed shots into power put-backs. Her strength down low and fast-twitch leaping ability consistently provides a vertical edge.
Morrow and the 8-2 Blue Demons welcome Nicholls State to Wintrust Arena on Tuesday for an 11 a.m. tipoff in the annual Wintrust Chicago Field Trip Day game as 1,700 elementary schoolchildren, teachers and administrators are provided free tickets and transported to the South Loop.
