
DePaul Powers Past UIC on Tuesday Evening

Javon Freeman-Liberty led three in double figures with a game-high 27 points
CHICAGO - DePaul rallied late and strung together a 9-0 run in the final 3:44 of the second half to take down UIC, 72-66, on Tuesday evening at Credit Union 1 Arena. Three Blue Demons finished in double figures as DePaul claimed the win over the neighboring Flames.
Javon Freeman-Liberty led all scorers with 27 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. David Jones shot 60 percent from the floor and chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds while Nick Ongenda recorded 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the inside.
The Blue Demons improve to 9-1 on the season and have won three in a row including the last two on the road. DePaul closes the non-conference schedule and three-game road trip this weekend at Northwestern.
UIC (3-7) opened the contest on an 11-3 run before the Blue Demons answered with an 11-2 spurt of their own to take a 14-13 lead after Freeman-Liberty converted a three-point play.
The Blue Demons were held scoreless for nearly three minutes midway through the first half before a Brandon Johnson layup off the bounce brought DePaul within four at 23-19.
DePaul put together a 6-0 run in the latter stages of the first half to take its first lead of the contest at 29-27 after a Jones layup. The Blue Demons held the Flames scoreless for the final two and a half minutes of the first half to head into the locker room with a 33-30 advantage.
Both sides traded buckets through the first nine and a half minutes of the second frame before a DePaul 5-0 run over 90 seconds gave the Blue Demons their largest lead of the game at 56-48.
UIC responded with a 10-2 run to take a 66-63 lead before Ongenda powered home a hook shot in the lane.
A Freeman-Liberty putback with 18 seconds remaining put the Blue Demons in front, 70-66, before a pair of makes at the charity stripe sealed the game and put DePaul in the win column.
Damaria Franklin led the Flames with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
DePaul closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Saturday, Dec. 18 with a short trip to Evanston for a 2 p.m. matchup with Northwestern inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. All of the action can be seen on the Big Ten Network with radio coverage on WYLL (1160 AM).
