Cold-Shooting Night Leads to Defeat for Men's Basketball

Blue Demons drop 57-47 game to visiting Providence on Saturday
CHICAGO – The Blue Demons struggled from the field throughout the night and dropped a 57-47 game against visiting Providence on Saturday. DePaul combined to shoot .306 from the field while David Jones scored 10 points to lead the Blue Demons and Nick Ongenda grabbed 11 rebounds.
After Javon Freeman-Liberty hit the first bucket of the game, the Friars scored five straight points to take an early 5-2 advantage.
Ongenda scored on turnaround jumper to tie the score at 11-11 with 14 minutes until halftime before the Friars went back up by four. The Blue Demons tied it again at 18-18 on a Jones drive in the lane and Providence stretched the lead back ahead to six at 30-24 before DePaul closed it to two at intermission.
Providence (11-10, 7-8 BIG EAST) scored seven of the first eight points of the second half as Ed Croswell scored on a putback to make the score 37-29 just over three minutes into the period.
The Blue Demons pulled to within four points with a 7-3 scoring flurry, but the Friars ended the run with four straight points and maintained the advantage for the rest of the game.
Jones added four rebounds and a steal to his first game in double figures. Ongenda's career-high 11 rebounds were joined by eight points and three blocked shots.
The Friars were led by a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double from David Duke and 13 points by A.J. Reeves.
DePaul (3-9, 1-9 BIG EAST) goes on the road for three straight games starting Wednesday at Seton Hall. Start time in Newark, N.J. is set for 8:30 p.m. ET on FS1 and WIND (560 AM).
