Successful home opener for Blue Demons Sunday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness
CHICAGO – Anytime you can beat a longtime rival from up north in Wisconsin, it's a good day.
That was Sunday when DePaul women's tennis knocked off Marquette 5-2 in its home opener at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
The Blue Demons improved to 4-1 on the season while Marquette dropped to 3-3
The evening began with No. 1 doubles team Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva easing past the Golden Eagles' best Andie Weise and Giulia Turconi 6-1.
After falling at No. 2 doubles, Maddie Yergler and Aspasia Avgeri came through in the clutch with a 7-5 decision over Emilija Kojcic and Tiana Windbuchler 7-5 in claiming the doubles point.
Alina Kuzmenkova opened singles play defeating Turconi 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. Right after that, No. 1 Avgeri topped Natalija Popovic 6-3, 6-3 for a 3-0 match lead.
The Golden Eagles got on the board with a result at No. 6 singles, but Kizelbasheva clinched it at No. 4 with a 7-6(9-7), 6-0 decision over Kojcic.
Marija Jovicic closed out the scoring for DePaul with a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 victory over Elizabeth Ferdman.
The Blue Demons spend next weekend in Omaha facing Creighton on Friday night followed by a match Saturday against Kansas City on Creighton's tennis courts.
