Blue Demons cruise past Kansas City 7-0 for fourth win in a row
OMAHA, Neb. – What a wonderful way to spend a weekend in Cornhusker country.
DePaul women's tennis began with a dramatic, down-to-the-wire, singles final-set 4-3 victory over host Creighton on Friday night and followed up with a resounding 7-0 sweep of Kansas City on Saturday.
For all the pressure and apprehension coach Marisa Arce and her team had experienced less than 24 hours earlier, Saturday was just the opposite as the Blue Demons won their fourth in a row.
DePaul (6-1) began the day claiming the doubles point with the tandems of Lenka Antonijevic/Yuliya Kizelbasheva, Marija Jovicic/Kaya Rand and Aspasia Avgeri/Maddie Yergler handily defeating their Kansas City counterparts.
Alina Kuzmenkova scored team point No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Riddhi Sharma at No. 2 singles. Yergler upped the Blue Demon lead to 3-0 after downing Eva Kresovic 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
The match clincher came courtesy of Yuliya Kizelbasheva's 6-1, 6-3 decision over Grace Ball at No. 4. That gave the DePaul sophomore her second-straight winning point as her clutch performance on Friday night ignited a joyous celebration.
Antonijevic added an insurance point at No. 3 with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(6) victory over Thanushree Vale. At No. 1, Avgeri prevailed over Yana Grechkina 6-1, 6-7(5), 1-0(6) and Jovicic made it 7-0 with a 7-6(3), 6-2 win over Michela Xibilia.
Arce & Co. will spend next weekend in Cincinnati to face Cincinnati on Friday and Xavier on Saturday.
