DePaul logs a pair of new school records at the Louisville Invitational
LOUISVILLE, Ken. – DePaul track & field wrapped up its first outdoor meet of the 2021 spring on Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky, finishing the second and final day of the Louisville Invitational. DePaul's MacKenna Orie and Kyle Mastrangeli both set school records, posting outstanding marks in the women's shot put and the men's 100m dash, respectively.
After setting a school record in the indoor shot put at the Blue Demons' lone indoor meet earlier this spring, Orie posted a mark of 15.76. Orie's record-breaking throw shattered the previous DePaul mark by more than a half meter. Orie finished second in the event behind Rashadia Lewis of Louisville.
Mastrangeli set a new program record in the 100m dash, turning in a time of 10.38. Mastrangeli won the event and broke a school record that had stood for 38 years.
"The goal for today's meet was to get our team back into a high-end competitive mindset," said head coach David Dopek. "We have watched the team have great practices over the last month or two but meets are a totally different animal. We haven't competed, as a team, in an outdoor meet since the 2019 BIG EAST Championship. So of course there was a little rust this weekend but I'm really pleased with the start we got off to."
Behind Mastrangeli's win, DePaul logged second and third-place finishes in the men's 100m dash as Adam Nelson and Brendan Van Voorhis rounded out the top three. The Blue Demons also posted first and second-place finishes in the men's 800m dash with Michael Parry and Ben Lee finishing 1-2 in the event.
On the women's side, DePaul had strong performances in the women's long and triple jump. Tori Carroll set a new personal record and finished second with a leap of 5.86m in the long jump.
"We challenge the team to learn something from each competition and 'waste no opportunities'," said Dopek. "We had several strong performances, and a couple of school records, in our first meet of the year. Track and field isn't just about times and marks. Sometimes it's about setting the foundation for your future performances. We have begun to set the stage for an exciting outdoor season."
Overall, the Blue Demons logged wins in a handful of events during the two-day meet. On the women's side Isabel Ingram and Kiersten Walker posted wins in the 100m hurdles and the 400m dash, respectively. Mastrangeli, Jarel Terry, Michael Parry and Brain Mada logged victories on the men's side for the Blue Demons.
"There is so much work to do in order for this team to achieve its potential," said Dopek. "It's truly a privilege to be able to coach these student-athletes and help guide them to their own greatness. This is something that we missed out on last year and we are all looking forward to making the most of this season. It's nice to be back."
