Three Blue Demons win titles, two program records broken
GENEVA, Ohio - DePaul track and field wrapped up the 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday afternoon. Tori Carroll and Mackenna Orie claimed conference titles for the Blue Demons along with the men's 4x400m relay team of Brendan Van Voorhis, Ben Lee, Ashton Colaire and Jarel Terry.
"This was a meet of ups and downs. Some really bright spots, followed by a disappointment here and there, and ending with performances that show that our future is bright. While it has been a long road returning back to championship form, the season flew by fairly quickly. We are very proud of what our student-athletes have been able to accomplish this year, especially under the current set of circumstances" said DePaul Head Coach Dave Dopek.
"We have had nine school records broken during this outdoor season, many of which were 25-30 years old. The large number of personal bests is a testament to our hard work, sacrifice and will to win. The regular season has come to a close, on to the NCAA West Preliminary rounds. We look to be well represented at the preliminary rounds in College Station, Texas."
Orie won the women's shot put with a toss of 15.10m. The conference title for Orie is the first of her career after she accumulated strong performances all spring. The sophomore was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet.
On the track for the Blue Demons, Tori Carroll won the women's 100m dash, posting a time of 11.52 seconds. The time was a personal best and program record as Carroll won the race by .10 seconds.
The Blue Demons finished off the weekend's meet with an exciting finish, claiming the men's 4x400m title. DePaul's team of Van Voorhis, Lee, Colaire and Terry edged Butler's group by under a second. The win came after DePaul finished second in the event at the 2020 BIG EAST Indoor Championships last spring.
DePaul posted a handful of strong performances throughout the day outside of the three conference titles. In the men's 100m, Adam Nelson and Kyle Mastrangeli finished third and fourth, respectively. The pairing also helped the Blue Demons to a second-place finish in the men's 4x100m relay. On the women's side of the 4x100m relay, the grouping of Aldana, Walker, Uscila and Carroll also logged a second-place finish.
In the men's shot put, Alex Murray saw a podium finish with a distance of 15.28m to take third. Ashton Colaire took second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.25 to match his program best standard set at the Pacesetter Sports Invitational on May 7.
Kiersten Walker broke her own program record in the 400m dash. The senior took second with a mark of 53.53, improving upon her previous record at 53.88 set in 2019. Walker earned more hardware after a third-place finish in the 200m dash at 23.93. On the men's side, Jarel Terry took second with a performance of 47.31.
The Blue Demons await final NCAA West Preliminary rankings to see which performers will be traveling to the national competition in College Station, Texas from May 27-29.
