Blue Demons beat Ramblers for first time since 2017
EVANSTON, Ill. – DePaul women's volleyball began its final weekend of nonconference competition in a big way with a 3-0 win over crosstown foe Loyola in its opening match of the Chicago Cup.
DePaul (5-5) came from behind in each of the three sets to claim a sweep against the Ramblers at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena. The victory marked the first for the Blue Demons over Loyola since the 2017 Chicago Cup.
Set scores for the match were 27-25, 27-25, 28-26.
Junior Bailey Nelson dropped in 11 kills at a .429 clip to lead the Blue Demons while fellow right side Emma Price put down 10 kills of her own.
Rachel Krasowski posted a match-high 15 digs while setters Molly Murrihy and Ashley Cudiamat dished out 17 and 13 assists, respectively.
The Blue Demons were potent at the net and recorded nine total blocks to the Ramblers six. Senior middle blocker Donna Brown along with Nelson closed five blocks apiece.
How it Happened:
Set One -- DePaul began the first set on a 5-2 spurt before the Ramblers won five of the next six points to take an early 7-6 lead. A Nelson kill allowed the Blue Demons to take a 10-9 lead. DePaul won the race to 15 on a Meredith Wallace kill before the two squads traded points to 18. The two squads needed more than 25 points to decide the first set, with the Blue Demons eventually coming away victorious after a Karl kill and Ramblers error.
Set Two -- Loyola took an early 7-3 lead in the second set and later extended the advantage to 12-7, before the Blue Demons cut the deficit to three on an Aly Kindelberger kill on an overpass. A successful DePaul challenge and Ramblers error kept the Blue Demons within striking distance at 14-11. A huge Nelson and Brown block brought DePaul within two at 16-14, before Loyola went up 22-17. The Blue Demons rallied together and strung together four of the next five points to come within two at 23-21. DePaul held off set point thanks to a Nelson solo block and evened the match at 24 on a Loyola attack error. Nelson's seventh kill of the afternoon followed by a Hanna Karl kill gave the Blue Demons the second set and 2-0 match lead.
Set Three -- The Blue Demons trailed early in the third 11-6, before a 3-0 run brought the Blue Demons within two at 12-10. Trailing 16-12, DePaul went on a 4-0 run to tie the match at 16 apiece. Loyola rallied to take an 18-16, before the Blue Demons answered right back with a 3-0 run of their own behind a Nelson kill followed by a solo block. Both squads traded set points until a Brown solo block gave the Blue Demons a 27-26 edge and a Karl kill put DePaul over the top to claim the set and the match.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: Super proud of this teams start to the weekend. That was a textbook match: plot against a team's strength, execute the scout, and bring our own response. We knew Loyola was coming into this match hot and wanted to play very rhythmic. Our servers did a nice job of tagging their targets and our block plus backcourt played their strengths just well enough to knock off their rhythm. Our offense responded and executed at the right times. We were also able to execute and win the non-stated plays where the ball found the net and it was a little ping pong like. I'm just really proud of players that were challenged to improve in practice in order to work their way into the lineup. Those efforts and that team attitude matter and that selflessness shows up in deuce setters like we played today. That was a full team effort and to come back in virtually every set, burn through all your role positions/ subs and to have multiple people contribute towards the team goal is what DePaul Volleyball is all about. Love to see it against a really good Loyola team.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will continue action at the Chicago Cup on Saturday, Sept. 18 with a Noon matchup against Northwestern and a 5:30 p.m. meeting with UIC. Both matches can be seen on BTN+ for a fee.
