Blue Demons face Villanova on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT)
WASHINGTON – The DePaul women's volleyball team extended its win streak to four on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Georgetown to open BIG EAST play.
With Friday's victory, DePaul (8-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) picked up its first win at McDonough Arena since the 2017 season while opening up conference play with a win for the first time since 2016.
Set scores of the match were 25-20, 25-16, 27-25
Donna Brown dominated for the Blue Demons with nine kills at a .474 clip to go along with seven blocks and six digs.
Sophomore Jill Pressly notched her 10th double-double of the season with a team-high 12 kills while matching her career-high with 20 digs. Emma Price was unstoppable on the right side with 11 kills including seven in the third set. Price hit at an extremely efficient .348 mark.
Behind the service line, Hanna Karl totaled a career-high three service aces on the outing to go along with 10 digs.
Ashley Cudiamat neared a double-double with a match-high 22 assists to go along with eight digs while Molly Murrihy poured in 17 assists, six digs and a service ace.
Georgetown saw three different Hoyas tally five kills to lead the way.
How it Happened:
Set One – DePaul jumped out to an early 11-7 after a Karl kill. The Hoyas came within one at 14-13 on a Blue Demons attack error, but DePaul quickly regained control taking an 18-14 advantage on a Georgetown attack error. The Hoyas came within one again at 21-20, but the Blue Demons staved off the surge with five consecutive points including a pair of Karl service aces to take the first set, 25-20.
Set Two – Both sides were evenly matched in the early going of the second set until a mini 3-0 run gave the Hoyas a 15-12 lead to force a DePaul timeout. Out of the break, the Blue Demons pushed forward full steam ahead and rattled off a 10-0 run with Rachel Krasowski behind the service line to take a 22-15 lead. In the span of the run, Bailey Nelson and Donna Brown were dominant at the net as the pair combined for four kills and four blocks. A Brown and Price block completed the 12-1 Blue Demon run and gave DePaul a 2-0 advantage.
Set Three – Georgetown opened the third set with a 4-0 advantage and maintained the lead through 19-14 to force a DePaul timeout. Out of the break, the Blue Demons narrowed the deficit to three on a Hoyas service error. Trailing 222-19, DePaul opened up a 4-0 run behind the arms of Pressly and Price to take the lead for the first time in the set at 23-22. Facing set point, Price knocked in a pair of kills from the right side to give the Blue Demons their first match point. A pair of points later, a Kindelberger and Nelson blocked sealed the set three victory and clinched the match.
From Head Coach Marie Zidek: Our team came dialed into Georgetown's strengths. They have some nice pins in Goyena, Williams and Barbosa that can really move it around and their defense can heat up any moment with Cusi back there. We had to win a variety of different ways. First set, our block heated up in the 20s. In the second set it was serving placement and in the third it was Emma and our defense. Feels good to close out with a straight set win on a scrappy team.
