
Blue Demons Fall in BIG EAST Game Against Connecticut

Brandon and Javan Johnson combine for 32 points and 12 rebounds
CHICAGO – Despite leading by one at halftime, DePaul shot just 20 percent from the field in the second stanza and dropped a 57-50 contest to No. 20/19 Connecticut at Wintrust Arena on Saturday evening. Javan Johnson led DePaul in scoring for the second-consecutive game with a season-high 18 points.
Johnson went 6-for-10 from the field while Brandon Johnson chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Huskies jumped out to a 7-0 start before the Blue Demons responded with seven unanswered points of their own to knot the score five minutes into the game.
A Nick Ongenda block sparked a run out and a flush on the offensive end to put DePaul (10-10, 1-9 BIG EAST) in front 20-13 with 8:21 remaining in the first. The Huskies responded with an 8-0 spurt including seven from R.J. Cole to cut the Blue Demons advantage to two.
The Blue Demons were held scoreless for the final three minutes of the first half and entered the locker room on top 29-28. Johnson and Johnson led the way for DePaul in the first 20 minutes with nine points apiece.
Connecticut opened the second half on a 6-0 run behind three baskets from Adama Sonogo to spark an early DePaul timeout.
Javan Johnson took it coast to coast to end a near three-minute field goal drought and bring the Blue Demons within six at 44-38. The Huskies pushed their lead back to 11 before a pair of successful trips to the free-throw line gave DePaul a window of opportunity trailing by seven with 3:28 remaining.
Johnson drilled the first field goal for DePaul in five minutes of action with 1:16 on the ticker to cut it to a two-possession game but it proved to be too late as the Blue Demons would come as close as five points before Cole sealed the game with a pair of free throws.
Cole led UConn (15-4, 6-2 BIG EAST) with 25 points on the outing while Adama Sanogo added 10 points and eight rebounds.
DePaul will take a week's reprieve from competition before making the trip to Xavier on Saturday, Feb. 5. Tipoff from the Cintas Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. on FS1 and 670 The Score.
