Blue Demons Held Off by Red Storm

DePaul falls to St. John’s in midweek matchup
CHICAGO -Â DePaul men's soccer (3-4-5, 0-2-2 BIG EAST) fell 2-1 in a conference matchup to the St. John's Red Storm 4-6-3, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night. The Johnnies scored the winning goal in the 65th minute.Â
Cade Hagan started off the night with a shot in the fifth minute, but St. John's goalkeeper Zenden Hart earned the save. Hagan added another shot in the 18th minute, but was unable to find the back of the net.Â
St. John's fired off 12 shots in the first half and the Red Storm connected on one in the 29th minute when Einar Lye found the back of the net.Â
The Blue Demons came back with their own goal in the 34th minute. Felipe Corral made a pass from the corner which then deflected off of a St. John's defender into the net.Â
The match was tied 1-1 at halftime. Gandhi Cruz earned three big saves in the first half, one of which was on a penalty kick. Â
Jack Richards got the second half started with a shot in the 50th minute, but it sailed over the top of the net. Freshman Ethan Gordon added a shot of his own, but it went wide left.
St. John's Wesley Leggett connected with the goal in the 65th minute to put the Red Storm on top 2-1. The last ten minutes of play saw Cade Hagan attempt two more shots. The Blue Demons had two corner kick opportunities as well, but were unable to score an equalizer.Â
The Blue Demons defense held the Johnnies to six shots in the second half. Gandhi Cruz added three more saves in the final 45 minutes to total six in the match.Â
UP NEXT: DePaul continues conference play at Wish Field on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Blue Demons will host No. 13 Xavier for Alumni and Family Weekend. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and admission is free.
