Blue Demons picked fourth in preseason coaches poll
NEW YORK – DePaul women's basketball sophomore standout Aneesah Morrow was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team as announced on Tuesday morning prior to the conference's annual basketball media day.
Morrow, a 2022 AP Second Team All-America honoree and consensus National Freshman of the Year, is DePaul's top returning scorer and rebounder after averaging 21.9 points per game and a nation's-best 13.8 boards per game. Amongst an onslaught of postseason recognition, the Chicago native earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors while being a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team and All-BIG EAST Freshman Team pick.
In her freshman campaign, Morrow broke 13 BIG EAST records including all rebounding records (single game, rookie game, season, rookie season, average, rookie average) and all rookie scoring standards (single game, season, average).
Tenacious on the backboards, the Simeon graduate smashed DePaul's single-season record for rebounds (457) while collecting 23 consecutive double-doubles and finished second nationally with 27 on the season.
The Blue Demons were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST by the league's head coaches alongside Seton Hall. Connecticut was unanimously selected preseason favorite while Creighton, fresh off an elite eight appearance, was selected to finish second. Villanova, led by BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Maddy Siegrist, was picked third.
Hall of Fame head coach Doug Bruno returns starters Darrione Rogers and Kierra Collier alongside Morrow while forward Jorie Allen returns from an injury to bolster the Blue Demons frontcourt. Bruno welcomes seven newcomers to the program including a pair of multi-talented transfers in Anaya Peoples (Notre Dame) and Jade Edwards (American) in addition to five freshmen.
The 2022-23 schedule features a formidable non-conference slate including four NCAA Tournament squads from a season ago headlined by a visit from 2022 national semifinalist Louisville in addition to matchups with Maryland and Miami. The Blue Demons will pay visits to local foes Loyola (Dec. 7) and Northwestern (Dec. 10) while also traveling to Northern Illinois (Nov. 12) for the second game of the season.
DePaul will open the season with American on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Wintrust Arena with BIG EAST action set to get underway on Dec. 4 with a trip to Butler.
