Blue Demon duo combine for 71 points as Doug Bruno eclipses 800 career wins
CHICAGO – Darrione Rogers and Aneesah Morrow combined for 71 points in a 98-83 victory for DePaul over RV/RV Miami on Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. The win marked 800 career victories for Head Coach Doug Bruno.
Rogers netted a career-high 36 points on 12-for-14 shooting including six of seven from downtown. In all-around game the junior guard grabbed five rebounds and dished out seven assists.
Morrow continued her hot streak to start the season, following up Tuesday's 42-point outing with 36 points while collecting seven boards and four steals.
Anaya Peoples rounded out the Blue Demons in double figures with 12 points to go with seven rebounds.
As a team, the Blue Demons shot a season-high 58.3 percent from the field while going 11-of-23 from deep (47.8) and edging Miami on the boards 33-29.
DePaul (2-2) was aggressive from the jump as Rogers poured in 11 points in the first four and a half minutes of the contest. A 7-0 run in the late stages of the first quarter gave DePaul an 18-14 advantage. After 10 minutes of action, DePaul held a 28-26 lead.
The Blue Demons ballooned the lead to 10 before six unanswered points from the Hurricanes cut the advantage to four, 43-39, with three minutes left in the first half. Back-to-back triples from Morrow reclaimed the double-digit lead as the teams went into halftime with DePaul in front 53-43.
DePaul showed no signs of taking their foot of the gas coming out of the locker room, extending the lead to 70-50 on a Rogers jumper. Miami wouldn't go away quietly, using an 8-0 run to close out the third quarter and cut the deficit to 12, with the Blue Demons in front 76-64. .
The Hurricanes came as close as 11 in the fourth quarter, before Rogers and Morrow took over to score DePaul's final 19 points of the contest.
Miami (4-1) was paced by 19 points from Lazaria Spearman and 18 from Chicago native Destiny Harden.
