Blue Demons offense falters in setback to Tigers
FORT MYERS, Fla. –
FORT MYERS, Fla. – DePaul's potent offense was stifled on Sunday afternoon in a 64-56 setback to Towson in the final game of the Elevance Health Fort Myers Tip-Off at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
The Blue Demons could never find an offensive rhythm, being held to a season-low 56 points on 34-percent shooting from the field.
Sophomore forward Aneesah Morrow totaled her fifth double-double of the season and 32nd of her career with a team-high 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Anaya Peoples finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Kendall Holmes and Darrione Rogers tallied nine points apiece.
The score stood even at 8 at the first media timeout with Peoples and Holmes combining for seven of the eight points. DePaul would be held without a point for five and a half minutes before a baseline jumper from Rogers followed by a free throw on the next possession tied the game at 11 after 10 minutes of action.
Morrow scored the basket and drew a foul while Peoples put in a layup off the bounce to give DePaul their largest lead of the half, 20-15, midway through the second quarter. The Tigers wouldn't go away quietly, scoring 10 of the last 15 points of the period to send the teams into the locker room tied at 25.
In the first 33 seconds of the second half, Morrow scored four points, but the Blue Demons offense was silenced for a four-minute stretch while the Tigers took a 32-29 advantage. Rogers' first three-point field goal of the game broke the drought and knotted the score once again at 32. The final 5:39 of the third saw Towson go on a 12-2 run to claim a 44-34 lead heading into the fourth.
Jorie Allen drained a three-point basket followed by a successful drive through the lane from Peoples to bring DePaul within eight with six minutes remaining, while freshman Tara Daye grabbed an offensive rebound and putback to make it a two-possession ball game, 51-45. The Blue Demons would inch no closer as Towson responded at every turn pushing the lead back to 10 and denying a potential comeback bid.
Kylie Kornegay-Lewis led Towson with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will return to Chicago and spend the week preparing for their BIG EAST opener set for Sunday, Dec. 4 at Butler. TIpoff from Hinkle Fieldhouse is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT with coverage on FloHoops.
