OMAHA, NEB. – After missing the last two games with injury, Jalen Terry made his return in a big way with a season-high 14 points Sunday afternoon. Despite several strong spurts from DePaul, Creighton took the 80-65 victory in the BIG EAST's first ever Christmas Day game.
Umoja Gibson joined Terry with 14 points for DePaul (6-7, 0-2 BIG EAST), while Eral Penn and Javan Johnson rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts. Penn notched his fourth double-double of the season on 12 points and 12 rebounds.
DePaul held Creighton's (8-7, 2-1 BIG EAST) leading scorer, Ryan Kalkbrenner, to just four points but the Blue Jays had an answer in Trey Alexander who scored a game-best 32.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Creighton held a 12-point lead at the under-12 media timeout, before DePaul began chipping away. Terry and Zion Cruz fired off back-to-back three-pointers followed by an 8-0 DePaul run that cut Creighton's lead to six. The Blue Jays extended their lead back to 11 before halftime on their hot three-point shooting.
The Blue Jays opened the second half 5-of-5 from the field, despite DePaul forcing several tough shots. After stringing together defensive stops and second-chance scoring opportunities, the Blue Demons made it a 10-point game, 68-58, with under four minutes left. Creighton, however, had an answer as the Blue Jays made four if their last five field goal attempts.
