
Blue Demons Fall in Overtime at No. 11 Providence

David Jones led five players in double figures with 19 points
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was DePaul versus 12,000-plus at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday evening as the Blue Demon took No. 11/11 Providence to overtime before coming up short by a score of 76-73. Five players scored in double figures led by 19 points for David Jones.
Six different players scored early in the game as the Blue Demons took a 14-11 lead midway through the first half.
Brandon Johnson knocked down an eight-footer to push the advantage to eight points with eight minutes left before Jones found Courvoisier McCauley for a corner three-pointer to make the score 22-13 at the six-minute mark.
DePaul (12-11, 3-10 BIG EAST) held the lead over the remainder of the first half as Providence cut the deficit to two on two occasions before Yor Anei scored the final basket of the first half with 17 seconds left and the Blue Demons took a 28-24 lead into intermission.
The Blue Demons opened the second half by scoring 11 of the game's first 13 points after halftime. A three-pointer from the left wing by Philmon Gebrewhit forced a Providence time out at 17:22 and DePaul holding a 39-26 lead.
Providence (21-2, 11-1 BIG EAST) didn't back down and charged back to within two possessions with seven minutes left in the game. The Blue Demons held the lead until the final minute as the Friars converted two free throws for a 60-58 lead with 44 seconds on the clock.
Following a DePaul time out, Nick Ongenda scored on a turnaround jumper with 20 seconds left before Providence's bid for the winner didn't connect and the game went to overtime.
Providence jumped to a quick five-point lead in overtime forcing the Blue Demons to play catch up in the extra period. DePaul was able to cut the deficit to just a point multiple times, but the Blue Demons ran out of time and Gebrewhit's half-court bid to send the game to a second overtime went off the rim at the buzzer.
Jones totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds while Jalen Terry scored 15 with five rebounds and five assists. Ongenda totaled 11 points and six rebounds and Johnson and McCauley each scored 10 points.
The Friars were led by 25 points from Jared Bynum.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena for two games in three days this week starting Tuesday when Butler visits Chicago. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m. on FS1 and WSCR (670 AM). Creighton makes the trip to the South Loop on Thursday night for a 9 p.m. matchup on CBS Sports Network and WIND (560 AM).
