
Freeman-Liberty and Jones Lead DePaul Over St. John's

Duo combines for 63 points, 18 rebounds, nine steals and seven assists
CHICAGO – Javon Freeman-Liberty and David Jones combined for 63 points as DePaul took down St. John's, 99-94, on Sunday evening at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons tallied their second straight win as Freeman-Liberty scored a career-high 39 and Jones finished with a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Yor Anei joined Freeman-Liberty and Jones in double figures with 10 points while matching his season-high with four blocked shots.
DePaul and St. John's went back-and-forth maintaining a one-possession game through the first 15 minutes of the first half before Jones and Freeman-Liberty hit back-to-back triples to put DePaul in front, 38-33, with 5:07 remaining.
The Blue Demons ended the first stanza on an 8-2 run with contributions from Anei, Freeman-Liberty and Jalen Terry to take a 47-41 lead into the locker room.
St. John's (15-13, 7-10 BIG EAST) cut the deficit to two at 60-58 on a Julian Champagnie jumper with 14:26 remaining in the second half before DePaul (14-14, 5-13 BIG EAST) erupted on a 12-4 run to take a 72-62 lead with 10 minutes on the clock.
The Red Storm hung around in the late stages of the game pulling to within three with just over a minute to go before the Blue Demons hit six consecutive free throws to push the lead back up to seven to seal the victory.
Champagnie led St. John's with 26 points while Aaron Wheeler added 20 of his own.
DePaul will play its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, March 2 when Marquette visits Wintrust Arena for an 8 p.m. tipoff. Television coverage can be found on CBS Sports Network and the game be heard on WSCR (670 AM). Prior to the game DePaul's senior student-athletes and managers will be honored.
