Courvoisier McCauley leads four players in double figures with 21 points
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Courvoisier McCauley scored a career-high 21 points to lead four players in double figures as DePaul defeated No. 21/23 Xavier, 69-65, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons led throughout the game and sustained a Xavier run early in the second half to claim the road victory.
The Blue Demons locked up Xavier early by holding the Musketeers to just seven points over the first eight minutes of action. McCauley's three-point play pushed the DePaul lead to 10-7 with 11:53 on the clock.
McCauley led the Blue Demons in the first half as he totaled 11 points that included a pair of three-pointers.
DePaul (11-10, 2-9 BIG EAST) led the entire first half and by as many as 13 points following a Jalen Terry dunk to make the score 32-19 with 2:35 left until intermission.
Xavier (16-6, 6-5 BIG EAST) opened the second half with a 14-2 run that saw the Musketeers take their first lead of the game at 37-36 less than five minutes after the break. Xavier's run put them ahead by five points before a step back jumper on the baseline by McCauley sparked a 13-0 run and the Blue Demons regained the lead.
McCauley scored seven points during the run and David Jones connected on a pair of attempts. McCauley's third three-pointer of the afternoon pushed the advantage to 49-41 with 10:51 left in the game.
The Blue Demons held the lead for the remainder of the game with Xavier pulling to within two points on two occasions in the final minutes. Nick Ongenda silenced Cintas Center at the three-minute mark when he grabbed a rebound and finished with a dunk while drawing a foul. His three-point play gave DePaul a 64-57 lead.
In the final minute, Ongenda and Brandon Johnson sealed the win with four straight free throws and the Blue Demons notched the 69-65 win.
McCauley added five rebounds and three assists while Terry chipped in 13 points. Johnson totaled 12 points and eight rebounds while Jones finished with 10 points and eight boards.
Paul Scruggs led Xavier with 21 points.
The Blue Demons return to Wintrust Arena to face Georgetown on Wednesday night. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m. on FS1 and WIND (560 AM).
