Sixth time Blue Demons have lost by a single point this season
LAS VEGAS – Gaining more experience in crunch time will go a long way towards a young DePaul men's tennis team approaching its true potential.
For the sixth time this season, the Blue Demons came up just one point shy in a 4-3 setback Saturday to a UNLV team that has already competed against three nationally ranked opponents.
Four of those DePaul close calls came on road matches and two on neutral courts.
Last year, coach Matt Brothers skillfully blended four graduate students, two seniors and a sophomore (BIG EAST Player of the Year Vito Tonejc) into the program's first BIG EAST champion.
This season finds the "Band of Brothers" reloading with five promising newcomers who represent the next wave in men's tennis.
On Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, DePaul (5-8) dropped the doubles point to fall behind 1-0.
Tonejc immediately atoned for the slow start with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over nationally ranked Christopher Bulus.
Lars Peder Minsaas gave the visiting team a 2-1 lead after defeating Zach Garner 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 4 singles.
That's when the Rebels (7-7) rallied with three consecutive singles wins to claim the match. Tripp Tuff had a rally of his own at No. 6, winning the final two sets after losing the opener.
The Blue Demons return to Fertitta Tennis Complex on Sunday for a noon match against Seattle.
