Blue Demons at UC Irvine Wednesday and play Dartmouth Friday in Los Angeles
CHICAGO – Matt Brothers appears to be taking a page from the Doug Bruno playbook of scheduling top-shelf opposition.
The incoming Women's Basketball Hall of Fame coach is renowned for challenging his Blue Demons with Top 25 opponents and NCAA tournament teams.
Brothers is bringing his men's tennis Blue Demons (6-8) to the West Coast beginning Tuesday at Loyola Marymount (LMU) which has already played eight nationally ranked teams.
They make the short trip Wednesday to Irvine for a match against UC Irvine (UCI) where the Anteaters are off to an 8-4 start with all four losses coming to---you guessed it---nationally ranked opponents.
The spring break tour concludes Friday against Dartmouth in Los Angeles. The Ivy Leaguers are 6-3 with two of the losses coming to No. 16 Columbia and No. 36 Princeton.
Competing in warmth and sunshine continues Brothers' strategy of conditioning his players for the warm climate of Cayce, S.C.---the location of next month's BIG EAST Championships.
Nobody will have a bigger challenge among the "Band of Brothers" than No. 1 singles standout Vito Tonejc. The reigning BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week could encounter a pair of nationally ranked opponents in Isaac Becroft of LMU and Emmanuel Coste of UCI.
Tonejc is well equipped for the tough assignments, bringing a 1-1 record against nationally ranked opponents into the LMU Tennis Center. The junior from Croatia has gone 12-1 in the dual-match season including a streak of 10 in a row. He is a splendid 20-7 overall.
Immediate-impact freshman Marino Jakic is off to a 9-5 start in his collegiate dual debut competing primarily at the No. 2 singles position right behind Tonejc.
Those two have developed a nice chemistry as the No. 1 doubles team with a 10-4 dual mark and 15-8 overall.
Freshman Matteo Iaquinto is 15-10 overall in singles while sophomore Lars Peder Minsaas is 10-7 and graduate student Tripp 13-11. Minsaas and Luuk Wassenaar are 7-5 primarily at No. 2 doubles.
